
Scrunchie was modeled using Nomad Sculpt and was retopologized using Maya 2022. Their skin was surfaced in Substance 3D Painter and the groom shader was made using the LamaHairChiang in Renderman 26.3.
While modeling him, I had the keep it mind the anatomy of a cat, as his animation will be used as a blueprint for the grooming artist. I also modeled additional tuft geometry that would serve as a curve guide for the groom in Houdini.

Going into this project my team and I knew we wanted to work on a 2D animated short which won Best in Originality in Gigajam! Gigajam is a 36-hour creative competition that allows participants to apply their desired creative techniques to a piece of work to be judged.
For the theme this year, “Out with the Old” we decided to delve on the theme of childhood nostalgia. Our main character, Shelby the beagle, wanders upon an endless elementary school that is haunted with a child spirit, being her younger self. Shelby knows that she needs to move on, but she can’t seem to keep herself from collecting old childhood keepsakes. As she fills her bag with more and more, she must face the overwhelming fear that perhaps it's time to leave her old life behind.
